2010: The Year We Make Contact

Gene Young was a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick's Science Fiction Masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. When Gene was approached to to make the letters "2010" for the films 1984 sequel, Gene was excited to be a part of the legacy.

Gene Young wanted the "2010" Letters to be the perfect representation of the famed "Monolith" They could have no imperfections. He decided to go to his favorite medium, and mill each number individually out of 4 inch thick Acrylic.

The producers of "2010: The Year We Make Contact" were a bit frugal, and Gene worked out a deal with them where He would give them a very good discount on the creation of the "2010" numbers, and in exchange they would only use the numbers for the teaser trailer, and Gene would keep the Numbers after they had been photographed for the commercial.

When Gene Young went to see a pre screening of "2010: The Year We Make Contact" He was surprised to see that his "2010" numbers were being used in the opening title of the film. He contacted the producers, and asked for an explanation. The Producers basically told him "I do what I want!" (that is not an exact quote, but it works for me). Gene brought a lawsuit against the film, and effectively postponed the movies release until the matter was settled.

*Gene Young told me this story 5 years ago, and I have done my best to relay it as it was told to me. I have not fact checked any of Gene's statements. This could be 100% true, or a Hollywood tall tale.

A few years back Gene let me take the numbers out and photograph them for my "Happy New Year" card. This photograph is from that shoot.
